Our Sioux Valley Huntington's Disease Fall Education Seminar was held Sunday, September 28. We had 45 attendees, including eight living with HD. What a day! Thanks go out to Dr. Arik Johnson for his dynamic presentations on understanding behaviors in HD and talking with kids about HD. Thanks go out to all who attended and asked great questions. Thanks go out to all who purchased items on our silent auction. We can't do these without your support. We hope to see you next spring - and fall - for future education seminars.

Following the education seminar Sunday, 11 of us gathered together at Backyard Grill to enjoy the best BBQ ribs in the area. If you weren't able to join us, we missed you. Included in this photo - front row: Eileen Krueger (our Sioux Valley support group's social worker) and Mary Barlow (a member of HDSA's National Field Committee, who is also a special friend from Minnesota). L-R in the back row: Board Member Peter Anderson, Evelyn Anderson, Board President/Member Debbie Augustad, Paul Augustad, Board Member Brenda Gehling, Board VP/Member Margaret Geertsema, Shelly Como, guest speaker Dr. Arik Johnson and Board Co-Secretary/Member Betty Strom.

USD Fall Education Event - Panel Discussion

Monday, September 29, 2014 -  10 am to Noon

Sanford School of Medicine, The University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD

GUEST SPEAKER:  Dr. Arik Johnson, Psy.D., UCLA, Lior Borovik, certified genetics counselor with Sanford USD Hospital in Sioux Falls, and an HD family volunteer panel.

Dr. Arik Johnson gave a 50-minute presentation to USD's first-year medical students, speaking on the topic of Clinical Aspects of Huntington's Disease.  Arik began his presentation with a brief description of "what is HD?"  He then discussed some of the clinical behaviors these future clinicians might encounter, what pharmacological interventions might be appropriate - why and when, treatment options, and genetics - why and when HD testing can/should occur.

Seven volunteers served on the HD family panel to discuss what circumstances brought them into the HD family, each bringing a different background and perspective to the discussion.  The USD students asked many great questions and we can only hope they will recall some of this presentation once in their future practice.

If you couldn't join us on the panel, perhaps you will consider doing so in future years as this presentation to the first-year medical students is something the Sioux Valley chapter will continue to strive for.  Please let us know if you would like to join the panel next time - or if you would like more information.

Huntington Study Group's HD Clinical Research Symposium and HD Family Education Day

Saturday, November 8, 2014 - 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, Minneapolis, MN

Dear all—enclosed is a flyer about the upcoming Minnesota state HD conference for patients and families, being held this year in conjunction with the Huntington Study Group meeting (for researchers and doctors).  If you are a person who would like to attend the patient/family conference, now is the time to register!  If you are a person who takes care of people with HD, please print this out and pass it on!  I would love to have a large attendance at this year’s conference—it is your chance to mingle with and ask questions of, the people who do the research that will bring better treatments!  There are also parts of the conference that are for patients and families only, without the researchers.  Both the “research symposium” and the “HD family day” are open to patients and families, and both are FREE, but we need you to register.

Please attend!  Please register!  Please call or email me if you have questions!
