A letter from the NYA's new Advocacy Chair: July 2010

Dear NYA Member,

I'm writing to introduce myself as HDSA's NYA’s Advocacy Chair. I’m here to work with you to mobilize and energize the National Youth Alliance behind the HD Parity Act (HR 678). If enacted into law, HR 678 will make it easier for people with HD to receive Social Security Disability and Medicare benefits. I’ll be working closely with Jane Kogan, HDSA’s Advocacy Manager. I’m so thrilled to become active in advocacy, because, working together; we really have the power to make a difference. The HD Parity Act already has 135 cosponsors in the House of Representatives! Seeing what's already been accomplished thus far makes me all the more excited to lead the NYA’s advocacy efforts.

So what are our next steps?  The first step is super easy, because you can do it from your computer! Contact your Representative and your Senators (make sure you do both!) and urge to support the HD Parity Act. The letters are written, and all you have to do is personalize them by adding your story! It's quick, easy and you can do it from the comfort of your home! Be sure to keep me, as well as Jane Kogan, in the loop, especially when you receive a response, to ensure proper follow up. Then, I would like all of you to join Jane’s E-Alert list, so that you can receive updates from HDSA when your involvement can make a critical difference. To join, click on the link, or go to http://capwiz.com/hdsa/mlm/signup/

Want to do more? There is a Congressional Recess coming up, from August 9 to September 12, when Members of Congress will be in their home states. This is a perfect time to set up a meeting to tell your story. I am going to meet with my Congressman Mike McIntyre, and I’d like all of you to do the same. Members of Congress need to hear from us to know that this matters! Jane is here to guide you through the process! She provide you with training and leave-behind materials. If you’re interested, you can email Jane at jkogan@hdsa.org, or call her by phone me at 800-345-4372 extension 226. I look forward to working with all of you!
