In June 2008, the National Youth Alliance voted to become a Virtual Chapter of HDSA.  What we thought would be a straightforward transition has turned out to be quite a challenge.  Over the past two years there has been a change in leadership, both nationally and in the NYA, and many discussions about the best format for the structure of the NYA and about what are the most beneficial and important issues and programs on which the NYA should focus.

Right now it's essential that we concentrate on making the 2010 HDSA 25th Annual National Convention and 3rd Annual NYA Day as successful and meaningful as they have been in the past.  In 2009, partial or full scholarships were awarded to 39 members of the NYA to attend the HDSA Convention in Phoenix, AZ.  This year we hope to assist just as many, if not more, members in coming to Raleigh, NC.

2010 is going to be another busy year, but we're always up for a challenge.

We need to organize ourselves to have at least one successful fundraiser in the first quarter to raise the required funds to provide as many scholarships as possible.

We need to gather ideas for sessions at the 2010 Convention and NYA Day so the Planning Committee knows what new information the NYA is seeking to learn.

We need to share ideas so that when we meet on NYA Day we can have a fruitful discussion on the best way to focus the NYA's energies, what types of programs we want to work on and how we can work with HDSA Chapters to enhance the NYA.

It's also important that we start to identify existing or new members of the NYA who are looking to take leadership roles, so that we can vote for the NYA Board of Directors at Convention. In addition to overseeing NYA projects, the Board is responsible for updating the NYA Website, organizing NYA Fundraising and Advocacy Activities, and working on events, such as NYA Day.

Within the next few weeks the NYA will be sending out a survey to all of its members.  Please take the time to fill out the survey and let HDSA know what you need from the NYA and how you are able to help.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please send them to Mynelly Perez (mperez@hdsa.org )or contact me directly (mailto:katharine_moser@hotmail.com).

I look forward to working with you to expand the programs of the NYA, to the benefit of our membership, as well as to the benefit of everyone within the HD community.

Regards,

Katie Moser
