HDSA Position on AAN Evidence Based Guidelines for Treating the Chorea Associated with Huntington's disease
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) recently released a set of Evidence Based Guidelines for treating the chorea associated with HD. Prior to publication, HDSA was asked to review the article and we sought the expertise of the authors of A Physician’s Guide to the Management of Huntington’s Disease (Third Edition). These authors had reservations with respect to the guidelines put forth by AAN and authored a letter on HDSA’s behalf which was sent to AAN. Unfortunately, the current AAN review process does not allow them to re-evaluate an article so close to publication and they elected to go forward. On the positive side, AAN will be changing their review process to invite organizations such as HDSA to provide commentary earlier in the process.
In the interim, we urge physicians and family members to consult A Physician’s Guide to the Management of Huntington’s Disease (Third Edition) for further information on the treatment options available for the movement and psychiatric symptoms associated with HD. A complimentary copy of A Physician’s Guide may be obtained by contacting HDSA at 800-345-4372 <tel:800-345-4372> or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
