RECAP: 3rd annual Pipers' Pub Crawl, a charity event to fight Huntington's Disease.

The 3rd annual Pipers' Pub Crawl - held on March 23, 2013 in downtown Middletown, Connecticut - was a huge success. Everyone had a wonderful time. The raffled was amazing this year, with items like gift cards from restaurants, t-shirts, ski passes to Mount Southington and Ski Sundown, tickets to the CT Whale, tickets to TheatreWorks in Hartford, passes to Six Flags New England, Middletown Police PBA Pipebandand shirts, and lots of other great stuff. At the end of the night the traditional grand prize was given away - a massive Ten Penny Ale sword. The contributions made thru the event in cash, online, and in-kind donations and will do a lot of good in supporting the fight to improve the lives of people affected by Huntington's Disease.

We are pleased to announce that a new support group will be held at Backus Hospital, entry level conference room, every 3rd Thursday of the month from 6-7:30pm. This group is open to all HD families; caregivers, at-risk and those with HD. Capacity is 20. There is free parking and the hospital is handicap accessible.

Special message from group leader Deborah Pausig. I would like everyone to think about specific challenges they are facing within the context of HD.  This will generate discussion and provide valuable input for future group meetings and potential guest speakers.
I also ask that you to bring names of doctors: neurologists psychiatrists, physicians/ hospitals/nursing homes/ home health care agencies/social workers/counselors//therapists, that you have had good experiences with in regards to HD.  We are trying to build a list of resources in Connecticut for the HD Community.

Winter Cancellation Policy: If schools are closed or have an early dismissal due to inclement weather in the town where your support group meets, Danbury, Norwich, Hamden/North Haven, there will be no support group meeting. For those in Danbury and Norwich, I am commuting one hour to your location. Weather in North Haven is often different than yours since I am in Northern New Haven County. If schools are closed or have an early dismissal in North Haven, no matter how the weather is at your location, I will not travel. I spent 25 years in public safety. Unnecessary and non emergency travel in inclement weather conditions prompting cancellations is a hazard not only to your safety but others on the road as well as first responders. School Cancellations can be viewed on WFSB Hartford Channel 3 and WTNH New Haven Channel 8, WVIT Channel 30.
The first rule of being a caregiver is to care for yourself. Safety is self care.

 We are the Connecticut affiliate of the Huntington's Disease Society of America, a national, not-for-profit voluntary health agency. Our purpose is simple:

We HELP individuals affected by Huntington's Disease and their families through support and services.

We EDUCATE both the public and health care professionals about Huntington's Disease.

We PROMOTE and support research directed at discovering a treatment and ultimately a cure for Huntington's Disease.

Brighter Today, Better Tomorrow

While there is still no cure for HD, today there is more hope than ever that we can beat this disease. Until then, our chapter will strive to provide support and sustenance to our HD families, knowing that while research provides hope for the future, we must provide care for our HD community today. We have become an active community, educating ourselves, sharing information, and advocating for ourselves and our loved ones.
